NVIDIA stellt GeForce GTX 280 und GTX 260 vor

Am 18. März 2008 schickte NVIDIA seine Dual-GPU Lösung GeForce 9800 GX2 als neues Spitzenmodell ins Rennen und erklärte diese Grafikkarten keinen Monat später zum Auslaufmodell. Warum dem so war, erklärt die heutige Vorstellung der GeForce GTX 280: NVIDIA hatte bereits einen Grafikchip in der Hinterhand, der als einzelne GPU die Rechenleistung einer GeForce 9800 GX2 übertreffen kann. Hierzu kombiniert NVIDIA ein 512 Bit breites Speicherinterface und 240 Stream-Prozessoren auf knapp 600 mm2 Chipfläche.

GeForce GTX 280 und GTX 260 werden im 65 nm Prozess bei TSMC gefertigt und verfügen über jeweils 1,4 Milliarden Transistoren, es sind für NVIDIA keine reinen Grafikprozessoren mehr. Neben der Grafikbeschleunigung beherrschen GPUs seit langer Zeit auch die hardwarebeschleunigte Wiedergabe von Videos und können mit Hilfe spezieller Entwicklungsumgebungen auch als Co-Prozessor verwendet werden. So soll eine GeForce GTX 280 Videodaten rund 18-mal schneller umrechnen können als aktuelle Mikroprozessoren. Auch beim Forschungsprojekt Folding@Home erreicht das Grafikmonster eine 45-mal bessere Leistung als ein aktueller 3,0 GHz Quad-Core Prozessor von Intel.

NVIDIAs CUDA-Plattform macht Entwicklern diese hohe Rechenleistung zugäglich, doch zunächst müssen die Anwendungen angepasst werden, um die Grafikkarte überhaupt als Co-Prozessor nutzen zu können. Ein Anwendungsgebiet, welches für Spieler praktischen Nutzen hat, ist die Physikberechnung. NVIDIAs hatte Anfang des Jahres den Physikspezialisten AGEIA erworben und hat nur dessen PhysX-Engine für seine GPUs angepasst. Laut NVIDIA wird PhysX von mehr als 140 Spielen unterstützt und von über 25.000 Entwicklern verwendet.

GeForce GTX 280Grafikkarten auf Basis der GeForce GTX 280 sollen ab morgen von ASUS, BFG, Emtek, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, Palit, PC Partner/Zotac, PNY, Point of View, Unika, Unitek und XFX erhältlich sein, NVIDIA nennt einen Preis von 649 US-Dollar. Graphics Beyond Gaming
One of the most powerful processors in the PC is the GPU. Rendering 3D images in real-time is just about the most mathematically intensive task your PC will ever undertake, but it’s not the only one. As PC applications become increasingly visual, many ordinary tasks will benefit from the graphics horsepower provided by the GPU, including encoding and playing high-definition videos, editing photos, getting driving directions off the Internet, or simply running a new operating system like Windows Vista.

Gaming That’s Beyond
The CUDA general-purpose parallel processing mode will usher in a new generation of ultra realistic games.
